Fiction | Poetry Submissions

The Flexible Persona is a literary magazine that publishes biannual print issues and semi-weekly web flash (fiction and poetry).

F I C T I O N | We read for engaging, character-driven fiction in which there is a marriage between plot and story. We are open to all genres.

We accept fiction submissions between 1,200 and 6,500 words. Please submit only one piece at a time. We accept (and encourage) simultaneous submissions. Please let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere.

P O E T R Y | We read for sharp-edged poetry. You may submit up to three (3) pieces in a single document.

Online Flash Fiction | Poetry Submissions (#InBrief)

What are we looking for? Think character-centric stories of identity or the body. Flash Fiction/Poetry is published weekly on the site.

Sharp-edged poetry (whatever this means to you), including narrative poetry.

Guidelines:

  • 1,000 words or fewer

  • Submit up to three (3) flash fiction pieces or poems in one doc

  • Unpublished work only (yes, blogs count as published)

Essays: Craft and the Writing Life (#TFPWednesdays)

We are looking for short essays (500 – 1000 words) on writing craft AND short essays on the writing life for our Wednesday editorial blog (TFP Wednesdays). See TFP Wednesdays for examples. ++Please note that we are unable, at this time, to pay for this category.

Guidelines:

  • 500 – 1000 words

  • MLA format with proper citations (for craft essays)

  • Craft essays should reference literary works or other essays on craft

  • Essays on the writing life should be personal, but may reference quotes from other writers (with appropriate MLA citations)

Some categories charge a $3 submission fee. Fees for online submissions help cover the monthly costs of Submittable, which is convenient for editors and writers. They are not reading fees. If you prefer to not pay this fee, please submit by mail.

Rights

As the author, you are granting The Flexible Persona first North American publication rights of your unpublished work. Copyright reverts to the author upon publication.

General Submission Guidelines

Simultaneous submissions accepted. Please notify us via Submittable if your piece is accepted elsewhere. We ask that you submit only one (1) piece to us at a time. Poets & flash fiction writers, submit no more than three (3) pieces in one submission.
